So you have a large casting pool and need a show to
accommodate them.
It is true to say that most of Melodrama Mike’s plays are in the 6-10
character range. This is to make them attractive to the professional market
where the cast demands are on a much smaller scale.
However, Melodrama Mike is not deaf to the pleas of those with large cast
requirements. Here are some suggestions on how to turn these smaller cast shows
into virtual epics.
If the script includes a barroom scene:
This is an easy one. There is nothing wrong with starting a barroom scene with a
musical number. Pick a rousing drinking song that these chorus members may sing
and dance to. It is important that you select something that is in public domain
and thus not subject to additional royalties.
If the script includes a town meeting, street, or mob scene:
You may include as many people in these types of scenes as you like. Give these
extra characters names and a few adlibs to throw out as well.
If the script includes a party scene:
You may have as many couples as your stage can accommodate, dance and even sing
at the party and then become spectators to the action as it progresses.
These are just a few ideas to include larger groups. True, it does take a little
